Texas’ mental health system earned a grade of “D” from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Grading the States 2009 report and Texas ranks 49th out of 51 states and the District of Columbia in State Mental Health Agency per-capita expenditures.
BHAT is dedicated to increasing consumer choice for mental health services in Texas.
Because Texas laws have not been fully implemented and private providers and state-funded Local Mental Health Authorities (LMHA) have lacked coordination, access to care and consumer choice remains out of reach for most mental health consumers in Texas.
BHAT is dedicated to ensuring that all Texans have access to professional mental health services.
Given the high numbers of uninsured and low levels of government spending in the state, many Texans are unable to obtain treatment, which results in over-utilization of emergency rooms and an over-representation of individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system.
